Where the Guardian Rests
Samuel Reed had always worked in his father's shop. It was stable, predictable income and a respectable position in the community but for years, he'd dreamed of traveling the world.
One morning he closed his shop to take a walk into the forest, following an old familiar path he always loved. The sunlight drifted through the trees, small, white flowers covered the ground on either side, and the early morning mist floated just above them.
His mind drifted peacefully as he moved forward and something caught his eye. An old trail than he did not remember seeing before. Ferns crowded its edges and shafts of pale light drifted between towering trunks. Curious, he turned down the path. The deeper he walked, the quieter the world became.
Eventually the path opened into a small clearing. A moss-covered stump rested beneath a silver beam of light. Beside it stood a carved cane leaning against the broad trunk of an ancient tree. Spirals wound through the wood, curling like unfurling ferns as if it had been waiting for him.
Samuel approached the clearing and lowered himself onto the stump, resting a hand upon the cane. The wood felt warm and a breeze stirred the canopy overhead. Leaves whispered, while somewhere nearby water moved across stone.
Samuel closed his eyes. For a moment he became aware of the forest around them. Not as separate things, but as parts of a whole. Roots reached through the earth beneath their feet, streams followed hidden courses through the soil, branches stretched toward the light, moss softened fallen wood, and life flowed through every corner of the forest in quiet exchange.
Certainty filled Samuel as never before. When he opened his eyes, sunlight filtered through the leaves like scattered gold and the clearing seemed brighter than before.
Samuel rose and gently traced a finger along the carved spirals one last time. A feeling lingered within him, deeper than understanding, older than words.
